More Bags

I don't have a problem. Really. See, there was this piece of fabric, from Amy Butler's Soul Blossoms line, that I fell in love with the first time I went to Valli and Kim's. I decided that I needed more, enough to make a bag. We'll, the bag came out larger than I intended, mostly because I was trying to get as much of the pattern in it as possible. So, it's not really going to work as a purse, but it'll be happy to serve as a tote bag.

Second bag this weekend: again from Soul Blossoms. This was leftover fabric from the skirt, and I was totally winging it! I had to give myself words of encouragement before starting without a pattern and just a vague idea of what it would look like when completed! I had the full length--a yard and a half--and about 20" of the width. I started by cutting off the border. The top band is 15" on each side, and the remainder became the handle. Both of these pieces were stiffened with heavy iron-on interfacing. I then cut the main piece in half and started pleating. Amazingly enough, when I finished the first set of pleats the bottom came out to exactly 15"! This was pure luck--I had planned to cut off which ever side was necessary to get them to match. After that, sew the band to the bottom. Baste the handle in, round the corners with a bowl, and make a simple lining. Sew the bag to the lining at the top and turn through an opening in the side of the lining. Stitch up the hole in the lining. Remember that I didn't put in a snap. Open back up the hole in the lining and finagle a magnetic snap into place, then re-stitch the lining. Voila! A new bag for my daughter!

Valli and Kim's Grand Opening

 Best. Fabric. Store. Ever.

At least that I've been in! I went to Valli and Kim's in Dripping Springs on Saturday to get more fabric for the Pickle Dish. They have the most beautiful selection of cotton prints I have ever seen, and are really big on bright colors and unique patterns. The store is laid out beautifully, with open beams and antique quilts hanging from them. In addition to fabrics, they have a selection of handmade gifts and cute, interesting trims. I wanted a yard (or 2) of each trim, but I held back.

What all did I buy?
  1. A piece of Michael Miller knit to make a dress.
  2. Two fat quarters of owls...I think I'm going to get a quarter yard of owls each time I see some. My daughter really likes them, and I have a vague plan for a quilt with lots of different owl fabrics.
  3. More Soul Blossoms.
  4. Fabric for the Pickle Dish. I really don't have much excuse to put off piecing it now. Gotta quit buying fabric and start quiltin'!
